Other Activities
La Sella Horse Riding Centre
The horse riding centre at La Sella can be found just below the information centre, pharmacy and supermarket which are all just a 5 minute walk down the hill from Villa Alegre. Called Equus La Sella, you can find out more informtion from their website here: Equus Horseriding
Water Sports
Based at Denia Port just ten minutes drive from Villa Alegre, Fun & Quads offer kayaking at la Cova Talla on the spectacular cabo de San Antonio between Denia & Javea. They also offer snorkelling to explore the rocky coastline. Visit the Fun & Quads website for more details.
A large glass bottomed boat runs regularly from Denia Port down the coast, stopping at Javea, Moraira, Calpe & Altea and then returning the same way. You can take a ticket to one of the ports, disembark for a meal and drinks and then rejoin the boat for the return trip.
Quad Biking
If quad-biking appeals to you, Fun & Quads by the marina in Denia offer excursions lasting from 1 hour to 7 days, including night trips. Check out the Quad Bikes website for more detail. They also offer rental of bikes, mopeds and skates from 1 hour up to a full day.
Clubbing in Ibiza
If clubbing's your thing, then you can catch the fast ferry from Denia to Ibiza in the evening, spend the night clubbing and then crash out on the two hour trip back home to Denia the next morning.
Local wines
The area around the villa is reckoned to grow the finest Moscatel grapes in the world and the local drink of Denia is made from these and called 'Mistela'. It is essentially a sweet dessert wine best enjoyed chilled and is ridiculously cheap. The small town of Jalon is just a 15 minute drive inland from Pedreguer and has a busy Cooperative bodega where you can sample the local red wine. Very palatable and again, very cheap. The days of Spanish 'plonk' are gone forever!
Sightseeing
The countryside around the villa is very attractive and driving inland is particularly rewarding. Try visiting the ancient cave at Benidoleig or for a day out, travel down the N332 or motorway to Altea and then strike inland to visit Guadalest which is reckoned by many to be Spains prettiest village. Perched on top of a spectacular rock formation it must be one of the most impregnable villages in the world! With lots of fascinating little museums and a fabulous castle this is a trip not to be missed.
There's a little single track railway (the Lemon Express) that runs daily between Denia and Alicante. We have enjoyed joining it at La Xara halt and then travelling down to Benidorm or maybe Altea for the day. Very reasonably priced and great fun for the kids, it travels through some spectacular gorges on the way.
For a longer day out, drive up the N7 motorway one junction to Xeraco and then catch one of the frequent trains to Valencia. It has some amazing new buildings (an Opera House a little like Sydney), the old city is very attractive and there are some fabulous shops. Perhaps not quite as spectacular as Barcelona but along the same lines!
